Enabling Young People to Support their Peers

Enabling Young People to Support their Peers

Sunderland Community Action Group (SCAG) was set up for the people and communities of Sunderland to address social issues and develop community cohesion within the hardest to reach groups of people in the City of Sunderland.

They successfully applied to People’s Postcode Trust for £2,000 to support their project ‘Ready2Go’, a volunteering programme that supports the development of life skills, ongoing personal skills and social development, all of which enable young people to support their peers.

‘Ready2Go’ was a hugely successful project and allowed young people to take part in a range of activities, including constructing raised flower beds in a new community garden. As well as this, the project helped to create a strong working relationship with the local college and has been successful in engaging college students. This in turn has helped with the delivery of the project to young people within their own community.

One young male attended the project, became a volunteer and has now been taken on as a young apprentice with Sunderland Community Action Group.
